Soggy, Not Sunny Florida

June 25, 2012

For the past three days we’ve been getting rain, rain, rain from Tropical Storm Debby. Our windows have looked like this (or worse):

Our pool looks like this:

The water is almost overflowing!

We’ve been lucky so far, though. We haven’t had any high winds, tornadoes or power outages, unlike other areas. According to the latest storm track, Debby might make landfall near Florida’s panhandle, blanketing nearly the whole state with more rain.

I’ve put aside the errands I planned to do today, in favor of sticking close to home, staying dry, and charging all our battery-operated electronics. (I remember what happened last time our power went out.) I’m keeping our AC running cooler than normal today. In case the power does go out, we won’t get hot and sticky quite as soon. I’ve also located the flashlights, and the batteries for the lamps and fans.

Welcome to summer/hurricane season.

No, this isn’t how I planned to spend today, but that’s OK. There are always more than enough things wanting my attention here. Monday usually sets the tone for my week, and I want to make good use of it, even though the gray and rainy skies make me want to go back to bed!

How will you spend today?

The orchids enjoy the rain.

  1. Glad you haven't lost power - that would really make it not fun. I actually did two sketches and some sewing repairs for my hubby today. I'd planned on cleaning up my sewing room too (it REALLY needs it) but didn't get much of that done. That's ok - it will still need it tomorrow (drat)!

  2. Sounds like a productive day, Cheryl! We eventually did lose power a couple of times, but it came back on pretty quickly...in other words, I still had to cook dinner!

  3. Hi Kathy! Good for you for being proactive and prepared. It is raining here too, but that is a totally different story. I hope that the storm by-passes you and that the sun comes out soon. Thank you for stopping by to see me; sorry that I have been behind on visits.

    Take care and stay safe,

    Kathy M.

  4. I think the storm is just about done here, though I'm not sure what it's still doing north of us. And don't feel bad about being behind on visiting--I think it's a common affliction in summer! I'm still getting caught up after our family left.

  5. At first we were thrilled to have the sun come out after 2 weeks of low gray clouds - but now it's getting to be too much. I miss our afternoon rains and overcast skies which take an edge off of the heat! The plants have been enjoying the extra rain and everything is growing like crazy.

I'm glad you didn't have damage. Some parts of Naples had tornado damage (not us, which is unusual. We had a few limbs down, and happy it wasn't worse!

  6. For the first time since Debby I heard thunder this afternoon--but still no rain. I know we still need rain, but it has made the humidity somewhat more bearable to have these dry days. I do enjoy those afternoon thunderstorms, though--if I'm someplace safe and dry!

Glad to hear you had minimal damage. There was a tornado not too far away from here, but we hardly had any wind at all in our neighborhood.
